A little blue. A lot of Springfield.

The crown, the crossroads, and the Ozarks inside the city’s flag.

A good local symbol gives you something to notice the next time you see it. Springfield’s flag packs several ideas about this place into a few shapes.

A crown with direction

The central emblem is called the Compass Crown. Its compass points represent Springfield’s role as a national crossroads; the crown refers to the Queen City of the Ozarks nickname.

Three stars, three ideas

The stars stand for innovation, a connection with nature, and Ozarks culture. The white band represents the Ozark Plateau and Route 66. The light-blue field evokes the region’s skies and water.

A newer chapter

The design was proposed by the Springfield Identity Project in 2017. City Council approved it in January 2022, with adoption effective March 1 that year, according to the city’s announcement published by Visit Springfield.

Next time you spot the flag, take a second look. It’s a small invitation to think about how Springfield describes itself—and what those ideas mean to you.
